Shin Megami Tensei Empty Shin Megami Tensei

Shin Megami Tensei is a long-running series of Japanese RPGs whose popularity in Japan is right up there with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Most of its titles did not start being localized for American release until a decade ago, and even then, it did not achieve popularity over here until Persona 3 came out.

The series is notable in that it typically involves you going around and recruiting "demons" as your allies. Despite the term, these "demons" are actually figures from religions and mythologies from all over the world, from benign deities and angelic figures, to bloodthirsty tyrants, true demons, and even Lovecraftian elder gods. It is notable in that it started the entire monster-collecting genre of video games, a decade before Pokemon came onto the scene. It's also known for its darker themes and letting you--the player--decide which path to follow in the end, as the games typically have multiple endings based around the Law-Neutral-Chaos morality axis, and none of them are really treated as more evil than the other.

A factor in the series not arriving over here was its critical look at the Christian God and his angels, going so far as to even feature him as the final boss in a few of the earlier games. Since the series got a more international presence, God's tyrannical tendencies have been dialed back significantly, though a few games have question and criticized his actions.

This sounds like a major recipe for controversy in the religiously-sensitive America, but the series is pretty niche, and does not garner much attention from the mainstream.

As far as games released or to be released in America goes, here's a list, along with the systems that they released on. Note that for the sake of brand recognition, all games carry the "Shin Megami Tensei" title, even though in Japan games outside of the main series do not carry the title.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2)
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS)
Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE Online (PC)

Revelations: Persona (PS1) / Shin Megami Tensei: Persona (PSP)
Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP) (the PS1 version was never released here due to Hitler being in it)
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PS1 / PSP)
Persona 3/FES (PS2) / Portable (PSP)
Persona 4 (PS2) / Golden (Vita)
Persona 4 Arena (PS3 / X360)

Digital Devil Saga (PS2)
Digital Devil Saga 2 (PS2)

Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army (PS2)
Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon (PS2)

Devil Survivor (DS) / Overclocked (3DS)
Devil Survivor 2 (DS)

Catherine (PS3 / X360) (unknown if it is an actual SMT title or not)
DemiKids Light/Dark (GBA)
Revelations: The Demon Slayer (GBC)
Jack Bros. (Virtual Boy)

Persona 5 is confirmed to be in development for the PS3. An enhanced port of the Japan-only Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers will be released for the 3DS at the end of August, and the 3DS will also be getting the newest mainline series game Shin Megami Tensei 4 (Nocturne is SMT3).

Now, discuss. Smile
