Vertigo is much better then your mainstream comics, imo.

The main read from Vertigo that I enjoy, is Sandman. Written by Neil Gaiman.
Other titles that I think are good include Preacher (for those of you that aren't offended by anti-religous works), DMZ (is a great take on the news industry), Northlanders (on going works from different writers and artists; good quality), 100 Bullets (just got the first issue of this tradeback so we'll see), and Hellblazer (graphic novel that the movie "Constantine" was based off of, also much better than the movie).
To save all of you some searching and multiple links. You can go here and search for the individual graphic novel you'd like to read or read about.
